This past Saturday, Sikh community leaders from the Central Valley, Bay Area, and Northern California joined Sikh Coalition Board and Staff members to discuss issues facing California’s Sikh community. In attendance were community members affiliated with El Sobrante Gurdwara Sahib, Fremont Gurdwara Sahib, San Jose Gurdwara Sahib, Sikh Council Of Central California, UC Berkeley SSA, and West Sacramento Gurdwara Sahib.
After an introduction of the Sikh Coalition’s mission, the group discussed issues including the Kirpan Education Bill (AB 504), employment discrimination, school-bullying, and an upcoming campaign against the US Army. Community members provided thoughtful suggestions and insights into how we can collaboratively work on these issues. It was very inspiring to see over 20 community members at the meeting. The Sikh Coalition Western Region Office plans to have these community meetings more regularly in the future.
